          You don’t get to dip in and out of relationship.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Not with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Not when it suits you.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Not just when you’ve messed up and need help cleaning it up.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Too often, we see a cycle:
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Silence.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Discomfort.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Mistake.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Then — suddenly — a flurry of engagement, requests, consultation.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          But here’s the truth:
          &#xD;

          We are not your crisis response team.
          &#xD;

          Real relationship is built in the in-between.

          In the showing up without agenda.

          In the listening when it’s not convenient.

          In the small, quiet threads woven over time — not the rush to “fix” what you broke.

          If your engagement only kicks in after the damage is done…
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          If you’re only around when you’re under pressure…
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          If you only reach for our wisdom when it benefits your image…
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          That’s not relationship. That’s extraction.
          &#xD;

          Here’s the invitation:

          Start weaving every day. Add to the thread, not just when you’re unravelling. Because trust isn’t built in reaction. It’s built in presence.

          You don’t build trust by showing up only when you’ve failed. Relationship isn’t a repair job — it’s a thread you’re meant to keep weaving, every day.

           We need to move beyond thinking of allyship as a personal value or a good deed done in passing. Because allyship — when it’s real — isn’t a favour.  It’s not a label and it’s definitely not a badge you get to wear for being “one of the good ones.”
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          Allyship is a leadership behaviour.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           A relational capability. A consistent practice that demands humility, accountability, and growth.
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          At Blak Ignited, we’ve seen the difference between leaders who perform allyship and those who embody it. The difference lies in the

          Relational Accountability Over Performative Leadership

          Leadership that centres allyship leads with responsibility to 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          relationships
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          , not just outcomes.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

          It doesn’t ask, “What’s the ROI?” Instead, it asks, “Who am I accountable to — and how am I showing up for them?” Relationally accountable leaders:

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Understand that leadership is reciprocal, not hierarchical.
         &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Take action that aligns with community priorities, not just organisational KPIs.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Show up with care, especially when historical and structural harm is present.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          Deep Listening and Cultural Curiosity

          True allyship starts with listening — not speaking. Not listening to respond. But listening to understand. To hold space for truth. To recognise when silence is more respectful than statements.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Culturally curious leaders:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Seek Indigenous and culturally diverse perspectives before making decisions.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Demonstrate openness rather than defensiveness.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Treat listening as a daily discipline — not a once-off gesture.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Emotional Intelligence in Moments of Discomfort

          Allyship gets real when it gets hard. It’s easy to support inclusion when things are calm — but the test is how you respond when challenged, confronted, or called in.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Emotionally intelligent leaders:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Regulate their responses without collapsing into guilt or deflection.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Use discomfort as a teacher, not a threat.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Stay “in the room” instead of retreating or centring their feelings.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Discomfort isn’t the enemy — avoidance is.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

          Culturally Safe Environments Are Built — Not Assumed

          You don’t get to claim your space is culturally safe just because you feel good in it.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Cultural safety is defined by those who need it most — and it's built through actions that reduce harm, address imbalance, and protect truth.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Culturally safe leaders:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Actively name and address microaggressions, exclusion, and inequity.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Recognise emotional labour and don’t leave mob to carry it alone.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Advocate for systems and policies that embed safety, not just welcome it.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Positional Power Used with Integrity
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Power is not the problem — it's how you use it. Leaders must learn to 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          decentre themselves
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           and redistribute influence in ways that elevate others.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Leaders who use power with integrity:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Leverage their platform to amplify marginalised voices.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Defer to Indigenous leadership without needing credit or control.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Back equity in procurement, policy, and representation — beyond the symbolism.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          This is leadership that 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          moves the needle
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          , not just the optics.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Reflective and Evolving Practice
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Allyship is never a finished product. It’s not a destination — it’s a disciplined, ongoing practice of reflection, re-evaluation, and repair.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Evolving leaders:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Invite and respond to feedback with openness.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Regularly assess their own biases, behaviours, and assumptions.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Understand that allyship is measured by impact — not by how good it feels.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          They don’t ask, 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          “Am I doing enough?”
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Instead, they ask, 
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          “What do those I serve need next?”
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Leadership Without Allyship Isn’t Leadership — It’s Control.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Leadership that doesn’t make room for others to feel safe, heard, or respected is not inclusive.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          It’s managing. It’s performing and at worst, it’s controlling.  If allyship isn’t in your leadership DNA, then it’s time to ask — 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          what is?
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Because real allyship doesn’t seek credit — it takes responsibility. It doesn’t wait to be comfortable — it moves anyway and it doesn’t stay still — it evolves, stretches, and grows toward justice.  So the next time you think of allyship as a kind gesture, remember:
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          It’s not a badge. It’s a behaviour. And it’s what makes leadership worth following.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;

      <title>Building Trust in Indigenous Contexts.</title>

          Trust Isn’t a Transaction: It’s a Relational Becoming
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          In many workplaces and institutions, trust is measured by output — by consistency, performance, and action. It's something to be “earned,” often through doing the right thing, saying the right words, holding the right title.  The formula goes: 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          “If I do this well, then you’ll trust me.”
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          In the world I walk — shaped by 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          Indigenous Ways of Being
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            — trust isn’t transactional. It isn’t granted through status or assumed because of good intentions. It isn’t fast-tracked because someone attended training or read the right books. 
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          Trust, for us, is not claimed. It’s felt.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            And it’s not something you hold — it’s something you carry with care.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Trust breathes in the small, quiet moments:
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          How you show up when there’s nothing to gain.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          How you stay when the story becomes uncomfortable.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          How you choose not to centre yourself — even when it’s easier to do so.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          It is relational — rooted in presence, humility, and deep listening.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          It is embodied — not in what you say, but in how you move.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          It is ancestral — shaped by kinship, by protocols, and by connection to Country.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Too often, trust is confused with being helpful, with rushing in to fix, or with saying, 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          “I’m not like the others.”
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           But trust built on performance is fragile.  It cracks under pressure. And it protects the self-more than it protects the relationship.
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          I see these patterns time and time again: people who care deeply but default to control or silence because discomfort arises.  Those who mean well — but unconsciously centre their feelings, their fear, or their desire to be seen as good. These are not failures of character — they’re inherited patterns. But left unexamined, they block the kind of trust that Indigenous peoples need in relationship.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          This is where 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          Emotional Intelligence
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           becomes essential.  Because trust in an Indigenous context isn’t just about what you know — it’s about how you hold yourself.  It asks you to regulate your response, to sit with discomfort, to choose humility over performance, and to keep showing up — especially when it’s hard.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          When 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          Cultural Intelligence
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           meets 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
          Emotional Intelligence
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          , something deeper emerges:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Relational Intelligence
         &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           — the ability to build relationships that are not only informed but honouring. Not only respectful, but safe.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          That’s what this moment — this movement — calls for.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Not more knowing.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          But more 
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          becoming
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          .
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Not louder voices.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          But deeper listening.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          Not just cultural learning.
          &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          But relational change.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          So if you’re walking this path of allyship, leadership, or cultural partnership, I invite you to pause and ask:
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Am I entering this space as an expert, or as a guest?
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Am I seeking trust… or honouring the slow work of building it?
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
           Am I willing to be shaped by this relationship — not just credited for it?
          &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
          Because in our way, trust is not a checkbox or a strategy.
         &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
          It’s not built in a moment.  It’s earned in the way we walk with one another - with care, with courage, and with a willingness to be changed.
         &#xD;
